Steve Singel Steve Singel is a man who is familiar to every Badger fan that attends football ... hockey ... or basketball games ... or for that matter, any Wisconsin event. He seems to be particularly a fan of basketball and can regularly be seen sitting with the band -- poised and ready to jump to his feet to conduct "If You Want to Be a Badger" at an appropriate time-out. He was made an Honorary Member of the band in 1988 in gratitude for his long-time dedication, loyalty and commitment to the organization. In a prime time television interview Steve stated The UW Band is a part of my family. Steve Singel was also much of the inspiration in the establishment of the Wisconsin Special Arts Band for which he is the Honorary Drum Major. In 1986 Ray and Elaine Singel established the Steve Singel Award as a means of perpetuating Steve's name and providing assistance to a member of the group that has been such an important part of Steve's life. The award is in the form of an engraved paper weight and a scholarship is given each year to that individual who most exemplifies The Spirit and the Pride of the Wisconsin Marching Band. The names of the recipients are engraved on a plaque displayed in the Band Office in the Humanities Building.
