It all began in 1997, when Chris Yahng decided to start UW-Madison's first all male a cappella group. Chris had been a member of "What Now" in high school in San Francisco and realized Madison was missing out on a great experience. So, he talked with his choir professor and found out another student, Chad Musolf, was also looking to form an a cappella group. From there, it was just a matter of scouring the choirs for members to help build the initial group. This was accomplished, and the MadHatters were born.
Their first year consisted of many gigs at hospitals, senior homes and around campus. That year's final concert came after the UW choirs concerts in the spring; only about 150 people turned out to hear the first of many MadHatter concerts. Since then, the MadHatters' spring concert has grown to a two-night ordeal with confetti canons, over 1500 screaming fans and a great showcase of music.
The group has been seen at Northwestern and Michigan Universities multiple times, many high schools, a cappella invitationals and around the community. Most recently, the MadHatters have spent their days in Smart Studios and Chicago Trax Studio recording their first CD, "State Street", which is due out in April 2002. They recently hosted the quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella and one of their songs, "Brought To My Senses", recently made in onto the Best of Collegiate Acappella (BOCA).
