Vartan Manoogian

Vartan Manoogian

Born of Armenian parents, Vartan Manoogian is the winner of the First Prize with distinction from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, France, while simultaneously attending master classes by Georges Enescu. In the United States, he received a master's degree from the Julliard School in New York.

His early career took him to Switzerland, where he was an associate concertmaster of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and later was concertmaster of the famed Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Ernest Ansermet and Paul Kletzki, with whom he toured in Japan.

He was a member of the Claremont String Quartet as artist in residence at the North Carolina School of the Arts, premiering works by Babbitt and Halffter at the Library of Congress, and of the Rowe String Quartet at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with whom he performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. C.

Under the auspices of the United States State Department, Mr. Manoogian toured nine South American countries. He was awarded the Certificate of Honor from the Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and First Prize for ensemble coaching in the Coleman Chamber Music competition in Pasadena, California.

In addition, he has recorded for Musical Heritage Society, Vox, and Lovely Music (CD), and as violinist/conductor he collaborated on the video Guide to Orchestral Bowings through Musical Styles aimed to assist conductors, composers, and educators. He has appeared in festivals in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Spain, and the United States. Mr. Manoogian is the Artistic Director of the Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival.

Vartan Manoogian is the author of four books under the series title Foundations of Violin Technique: Shifting, Modal Scales, Thirds, and Sixths, published in 1996 in English and Spanish by Real Musical in Madrid, Spain.
